In 1917, George Trenary purchased the present day “Opera House Theater” on the west side of Main Street in Kooskia, ID

Like many other funeral homes in that era, the ground floor was a hardware store and the upstairs floor operated as the funeral home. The name of the business at that time was “Kooskia Furniture and Undertaking.”

Change to: In 1940, George Trenary built Trenary Funeral Home where it sits today. Just two years after completing the funeral home, George Trenary passed away from kidney surgery complications. His son, Claude Trenary, and Claude’s wife, Irene, took over the business. They were well liked and appreciated among local townsfolk for their compassion and selfless acts to families of the Kooskia, Idaho community. Irene in particular was known for her homemade cakes that she gave to the families they served.

In 1972, Claude and Irene’s son, Mark Trenary, returned from school and began working at the funeral home and eventually took over operations of the funeral home business for his aging father. Mark served the community well for over 30 years and carried on the legacy as a 3rd generation owner.

In August 2002, Bob Wilcox was brought on to work in Kooskia, and in 2006, Bob Wilcox purchased Trenary Funeral Home. Bob loved being the owner of the funeral home and had a passion for getting involved with the local community, who loved Bob in return

Sadly, on Sunday May 24, 2020, Bob lost his battle with cancer, peacefully surrounded by family in his home. Bob took pride in the funeral business that he owned and operated, striving to serve each family to the best of his ability. He smiled often and loved people well. He was a beautiful example of loving your neighbor and gave priority to the needs of others, whether they were a friend or community member. He enjoyed being outdoors and could be found hunting, camping, razor riding, and mountain biking anytime he could squeeze it into his schedule. He will be remembered for loving and accepting people just as they were. Bob was a friend to everyone he met, but his first priority was always his family. He loved them deeply and was very proud of each of them. He recently stated that, “If everyone knew how much they were loved, life would be so much better!”

In 2021, David McNeil moved to beautiful Kooskia, ID and became the new general manager of Trenary Funeral Home. David was raised in the Hawaiian Islands and brings with him more than 30 years of experience as a funeral director and manager. He has a deep love for serving families in the local community and is glad to be back in Idaho where he hopes to make his final home with the good people of Kooskia, Kamiah, and the greater Clearwater Valley.

David is married to his companion Shawna and together they have raised 7 children. David and Shawna are active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Masons, and the Amateur Radio Club.
