Mabon attended Lake Oswego High School in Oregon, graduating in 1965. He attended Oregon State university for 2 terms before Mabon joined the United States Marie Corps. Mabon proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. He attained the rank pf Lance Corporal. He served in Vietnam from December 1966 until January 1967. His first Vietnam assignment was with an artillery security unit at Fire Base PK-17. He then volunteered for the USMC Combined Action Program. He served as a squad leader with Combined Action Unit PAPA 2/4 at the village of Lai Phouc located south of the Marine Corps Base at Dong Ha in Quang Tri Province Vietnam. He was given the nickname 'Hollywood Mabon' by his fellow Marines because he always wore sunglasses. He was considered a Marine's Marine by all who served with him. He was a logger and also was the owner of Blue Mountain Packers, a company that provided guided hunts into the mountains out of Troy Oregon. He was a salesman for Peerless Garbage Company and owned his own company selling Asphalt Equipment.
Mabon was the kindest and most fun-loving man ever. He married the love of his life, Sandarah Lynne Lee on July 2, 1997, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mabon never met a stranger and was friends with everyone. When you first meet him, whether at the gas station or grocery store, campsite, or fishing hole, you quickly become his best friend. He was interested in people and their lives. Asking questions was intriguing to Mabon. He was playfully mischievous, upbeat, loyal, and extremely optimistic. "One more ridge!" He would always say. Mabon's family and friends all know that his favorite saying was "No Worries, mate." He did not let things bother him too much. There was always a bright light at the end of any tunnel, no matter how dark it was. Mabon was dedicated to his family and friends and would give you the shirt off of his back if he knew you needed it. He loved cooking and was excellent at it. Many loved ones had a lot of "firsts" in terms of different meats and meals they had never tried before Mabon cooked it for them. Snake, Pigs head, Beaver, etc.
Mabon was a wildlife enthusiast and loved the great outdoors hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, and packing his horses and mules into the backcountry. Mabon enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great friends. He loved playing practical jokes on his friends and loved to get a reaction to pushing someone's buttons on any subject. Mabon loved guessing someone's ascent when first meeting them, and most of the time he was correct.
