James (Jim) Allen Young passed away at home on October 25, 2022 at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife Vivian of sixty-four years; children Virginia (Barry) Fiske, Jonna Young, and Charles (Suzanne) Young; grandchildren Annie, Ben, Gabi, Connor, Andrew (Lee), and Elizabeth (Luke); brother “Sonny,” sisters-in-law Dorothy and Willie, and brother-in-law Gene, along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Christina, siblings Jane, Ruth, Fred, Rich, Arlene, sister-in-law Laureen, and brother-in-law Paul.
Jim was born in rural Ohio near Cincinnati to Ralph and Christina Young on March 18, 1936. He grew up on the family farm with six other siblings where they raised soy beans among other crops. Jim left home as young man to join the Air Force where he was able to see the world while stationed in Morocco, Greenland, Iceland, and Guam. During his military career, he was also stationed domestically in Mountain Home, Idaho where he met Vivian Hardin. The two were married in August of 1958.
Jim and Vivian went on to have three children. They lived in Spokane before moving to University Place, Washington where Jim owned his own business (Hybalaire), and coached his children in girls’ softball, basketball, and powderpuff football, as well as boys’ soccer. He enjoyed playing many rounds of golf and was at one time the president of the Men’s Club at Meadow Park Golf Course. During the Tacoma centennial celebration Jim was cast as Abe Lincoln in the outdoor city play at the Lincoln Bowl, and fit the role with full beard and top hat.
After their kids were grown Jim and Vivian travelled and eventually settled in Clarkston, Washington. Jim was an avid woodworker (Intarsia, Kumiko screens and furniture), baker, and candy maker as he got older.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 2:00 pm (viewing at 1:30) at Trenary’s Funeral Home in Kooskia, Idaho. A potluck at the IOOF hall in Clearwater to celebrate his life will follow after the burial services at Pinegrove cemetery.
The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Elite Hospice, especially Teri, Cheryl and Connie. Thank you for your most caring hands and kindest words to our dad and family during this most difficult time.
